Snow!!! ...well, sort of

In true southern fashion, school was delayed at the hint of the possibility that snow and ice may hit the area. This is something I had forgotten about the South after being away for several years. People freak out when the weather man suggests that it may snow.

I remember working at one of the grocery store's (Seessel's) in Memphis, TN for a couple of years during high school. I hated the weatherman (I know it should be weatherperson, but just go along with me for this posting...thanks) for telling everyone that it might snow. For me, this meant an endless sea of people at the grocery store stocking up on bread, milk, and other essentials, because "you just never know...this could be a big storm and you might not be able to ever leave the house again." Or at least this was the mentality of the shoppers.

I assumed that the grocery stores or local government had an agreement to give these forecasts every so often to boost sales or clear out access inventory. Needless to say, at the end of the proposed storm nothing ever happened. The streets were to warm to ice over and the only snow to stick might have been on the roof tops and grass. Now to the weatherman's benefit, there were two times in fifteen years that he got it right.

Having these type of forecasts are not all bad. Such was the case today. I got to sleep in and miss one class. Also, I know a weatherman now! If you work for a grocery store and would like to scream at the weatherman for the rush of customers that you had to deal with yesterday, email me for his contact information.

  1. You know, these SC people don't know how good they have it. This was pretty much a big fat nothing from where I'm from. I'm sure it was the same for you eh?
